Older, and desperately poor with no family to help take care of them, the Elders need help with basic living needs. They live in ancestral homes with extremely small plots of land or no land at all, in a one-room home, no heat other than a fire from cooking food, no running water, their homes are dark and cold.
The Elders live alone in their homes, unable to plant potatoes or other food for them to eat. They live in and around Khumjung Village, all their lives, as did their ancestors before them. Khumjung is at an altitude of 12,500-13,000 feet and the summers are short and the winters long, dark, dreary and cold.
The community helps as they can, but most families have little food to spare for others.
